Danny’s Grace was dedicated to 10-year-old Kami Ring and children like her. That is why I thought it was important to keep everyone updated on her case. For those of you who do not know the case, Kami was raped and murdered by a man who she trusted and considered to be her uncle. He has been charged with several crimes including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree rape, and second-degree rape. He was also charged with child sexual abuse.
He has been held in jail since he was arrested several days after she was found dead in an empty lot. New information released today reveals that the case will be indefinitely postponed to give him more time to prepare for the trial. He has given up his right to a speedy trial in order to avoid going to court on the originally set date. It seems almost ironic that he would ask for more time considering Kami wasn’t allowed to have more time.
Many people in the Cecil County area are already outraged that he will not have to face the death penalty. The State of Maryland abolished the death penalty not long before this murder took place. It is uncertain what possible defense anyone could possibly have for doing that to a child, but, he gets the chance to prepare for his defense; something else that Kami was denied. What type of defense does a 10-year-old have against a man who she trusted?
The county newspaper, the Cecil Whig, has the full story and you can read it here. Read it and let me know what your thoughts are on it.
